Frequently Asked Questions
What is a psychologist?
Psychologists are trained to understand how we think, feel, and behave, and how we can support changes in those domains. Clinical psychologists specialize in assessing, diagnosing, and treating problems with emotions (e.g., mood, anxiety, anger), thoughts (e.g., unshared experiences such as psychosis), and behaviours (e.g., problematic substance use). In this provice, clinical psychologists are regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. They typically have PhDs and are well trained in research. They are differentiated from other helping professions such as :
-Psychiatrists: like psychologists, they can deliver diagnoses, but they have attended medical school, and can prescribe medication. They are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
-Psychotherapists (including some Social Workers): provide “talk therapy” though cannot diagnose mental health conditions or prescribe medications. Their training is different (Masters degree) than that of Clinical Psychologists. They are regulated by The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and/or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
What are the fees?
Individual psychotherapy sessions (50 minutes) are charged at $275 (no tax). Sliding scale may be available depending on individual circumstances, and these spots are generally reserved for those with marginalized identities.
Services provided by psychologists are not covered by OHIP. Many insurance programs provide some degree of coverage. Clients are responsible for verifying the details of their plans and for submitting receipts for reimbursement.
Payment can be made via e-transfer or credit card.
There is a 24 hour cancellation policy.
Session format, frequency, and length?
Individual psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes unless otherwise specified. These can be offered in person (Toronto’s west end), virtually, or over the phone.
Frequency of sessions will be determined after the initial intake, as this depends on the presenting concerns. In general, sessions initially occur weekly or biweekly for an agreed upon period of time.
Sometimes great work can be done in a handful of sessions, and other times sessions occur for 1+ years especially if there are a series of concerns to address. It is also common for clients to reach their goals and end therapy after a series of sessions, and then return months or years later to address another concern.
What types of therapy are offered?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, including subtypes depending on the presenting issue, such as:
Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD
Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD
CBT-I for Insomnia
I was trained as a behaviourist and originally gravitated towards this perspective because I think that it can allow us to shed value judgments about who we are and what we do. To me, it’s an orientation that strongly values the way our brains work, the importance of the environment, and displaces assumptions about intent or hidden motives, which is the seed of so much judgment and prejudice that becomes entrenched. It isn’t the only way I conceptualize but it definitely informs how I think.
